A BRIEF SHOW SUMMARY
“The Ghosts All Around You” is set on Roosevelt Island, featuring landmarks such as the Smallpox Hospital and The Octagon (formerly the NYC Insane Asylum). Even the Roosevelt Island Red Public Bus plays a role! Every year, since her husband William (played by Gabriel Portuondo) died, the struggling yet optimistic single mother Cheryl Makepeace (played by Kimbirdlee Fadner) reads “A Christmas Carol '' to her three young children, hoping to teach her kids goodwill and kindness. This year, the family moved to the Octagon, and Cheryl works for the modern day Scrooge and real estate tycoon, Potiphar Stingyas (played by Russ Cusick). Circumstances, in the form ghosts of the past, present and future (a.k.a. Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol), arise to reveal inequalities and painful pasts which lead to self-examination, redemption and valuable life lessons, as the ghosts try to break through and a memorable story is told and sung.

“Last year was a time of development for “The Ghosts All around You.” At the time, the city was in the grips of the Covid 19 pandemic and life was scary and uncertain. MSTDA forged ahead by reinventing their programming and allowing creative artists a safe haven to be creative and stay connected and safe. Their perseverance is paying off this year with a staged production of the new musical. Jonathan and I, along with the support of Executive Director Kristi Towey and the MSTDA Board of Directors and our cherished “theatre family” here at MSTDA are thrilled to produce this deeply meaningful and community-minded new work.”

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
PREFACE (from the 1st edition of A CHRISTMAS CAROL)
I HAVE endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their house pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.
------ Their faithful Friend and Servant, C.D. December 1843.
No doubt C.D., even playfully, believed in the power of Ghosts and how they could impact health and temperament, even in the form of a “little book.” Don’t let it sour how people think of themselves, one another, the holiday time, and certainly not the author himself, he implores even before the reader reads those first lines “MARLEY was dead.”
What is this power? And what does it mean in a time of suffering, when a virus indiscriminately claims lives, an economic struggle claims livelihoods, and political division claims hope for a better future. For C.D., a spirit can open one’s eyes to his past choices. Also press one to analyze her present behaviors. Even force one to take ownership of all the actions they will commit that they have yet to imagine. These ghosts can assume the guise of people we’ve loved or who’ve loved us, or even worse, who’ve despised us. We already have lots of history with these ghosts, and while we know we’re flesh and blood and very real, are they? Some scary stuff, perhaps more apt for Halloween than Christmas.
But then C.D. assures us by insisting, have a little fun while we’re at it. So that is my wish for you.
These ghosts are indeed all around you, and it’s with that pleasant haunting that I invite you into the world of Jonathan Fadner’s ghostly conjurations during this holiday time. As our own Ghost of Yet to Come leaves us wondering how the season will unfold, consider taking the time to honor those who’ve been lost and to look back on how far we’ve come, as well as celebrating the wonder and grace that enable us to share our time together, if but for this one moment in the present.
